Lancaster, playing one of several judges who sat on the bench during the Third Reich, on trial for crimes against humanity, sits in stoic silence throughout the trail as Maxamillian Schell, whose academy award winning performance as the group?s defense counsel, tries to convince the Tribunal (chaired by Spenser Tracy) that the judges were not aware of what the Nazi?s were really doing.

During a highly inflammatory cross-examination of Judy Garland?s character (who had fraternized with an old Jewish man) by Schell, Lancaster has finally had enough and stands, his face a visage of fury.

In what may be his most prized performance outside of Elmer Gantry, Lancaster, his voice rising with intensity and volume with each word, tells Schell and the rest of the court that he and the others were aware, and asks in rhetorical outrage:

?Were we DEAF, DUMB, BLIND??

It is a moving performance.

Lancaster I am not, but the question applies, are they DEAF, DUMB, BLIND?

I am thumbing through Forbes scanning the ads in search of one that attracts interest instantly. There is a picture of a red brick wall that takes up most of the full page, four color ad. It?s a home builder or construction company,watches, I think. But this is a wild guess.

I look more closely because I am writing this article. At the top of the wall is the word Elevate. Perhaps it?s some kind of self improvement program.

I look at the copy that would best be read with the Hubble telescope. But I read it (which I would never have done under ordinary circumstances). It?s an ad for Conoco Philips, the oil giant, explaining ?where others see an obstacle, we see a chance to elevate.?

Huh?

Did they have some recent failures, I wonder, and now feel compelled to tell people that they can overcome them?

In short, what in the name of John David Rockefeller has this got to do with selling oil and gas?

I have subsequently seen this ad in other business publications. It is someone?s bright idea for an advertising campaign.

Unbelievable.

Who signed off on this?this?metaphorical brick wall, this Tony Robbinsesque PR ad?

I?m sorry, but what a waste.

I don?t care how sexy the girl, how elegant the design, how sophisticated the message, if it doesn?t generate a desire for the product that leads to increased sales and income; it hasn?t done its job.

I close with what is a self-serving note that nevertheless happens to be true. Your ads should forward a message and a position that have come from the mind of your public ? not the boardroom.

That way they resonate and generate sales and income.

Advertising that appeals to teenagers, links alcohol with sexual and sporting success,uk watches, and encourages questionable standards of taste and morality has been heaviliy criticised by social commentators and health professionals.

They argue that such advertising seriously violates a corporate duty of care towards the Australian community.

In recent years, alcohol consumption has been promoted on Australian television through commercials with overtly sexual themes. In one such ad, a talking polar bear and a group of men eavesdrop on a young woman sitting at a bar. She credits alcohol with success in finding casual sex,and the men make no secret of the fact that this is what they like to hear.

Another commercial shows a young woman lifting her T-shirt and flaunting her breasts to a young man she has just beaten in a game.

A recent beer poster depicted a drawing of a young and attractive woman holding a bottle of beer in one hand and lifting her dress with the other.

These types of beer promotions, clearly designed to attract young drinkers, evoke subtle, but unrealistic sexual expectations associated with drinking alcohol and contribute to unhealthy relationships.

In an approach to sell alcohol to young people, hundreds of thousands of leaflets were used to promote web sites that encouraged school leavers to join a party with a particular alcoholic beverage.

Another web site posted by a large Australian beer manufacturer promoted free beer to fuel university student parties and offered the chance to become a "Citizen of the Keg."

Sport is an important part of many people's lives and sports venues have been targeted by alcohol manufactures for promotion of their products, thereby building an association between sport, sporting heros and alcohol to boost sales.

However, the link between alcohol consumption and antisocial behaviour at these venues has become so obvious that in 2003 the New South Wales Police Association took the unprecedented step of asking for alcohol to be banned at major sporting venues.

The police association cited examples of very attractive young women, with the names of alcoholic products printed across their bikini bottoms, selling alcohol at sports venues.

A similar social problem exists with the new ranges of alcoholic beverages that look like soft drinks and appeal to younger and, in particular, female drinkers. These drinks are often referred to as "Alcopops"

Some bottles of these premixed drinks, which are often brightly coloured and usually contain vodka or bourbon,Rolex, have the words Cola or Lemonade in far larger print than other words on the label.

The promotion of these products in this way is another example of corporate violations of duty of care, and should be stopped.

Clearly, the present situation of alcohol trading is unacceptable in terms of the health and social costs the community is required to bear.

Measures to limit the availability of alcohol?such as through licensing drinkers, banning advertisements, banning discounted drinks and free entertainment, banning drink-driving and so on?will go a long way toward reducing the cost of alcohol to society.

While these control measures are essential, they will not, by themselves, reduce the social and health costs of alcohol to an acceptable level.

Too often a company is so closed off from people their customers have trouble connecting with them in any meaningful way. The business becomes a place to shop at and nothing more because the business doesn?t let people get any closer to them.

It wasn?t long ago that I saw some pictures circulating around about what it looked like in the office for Google. They showed all of these interesting designs in the way the offices looked, things they provided for their employees, and other creative details to make their company as unique as possible.

The appeal of this was from getting such an inside look into what it?s like to work in such a well-known company. People spend so much time seeing the brand name, so they want to see what actually keeps that brand name going. How well do they treat their employees and what kind of environment do they create for their employees?

By opening up the doors to something like that the company draws people closer to them. They open up a window into what their company is like to encourage people to trust them and continue doing business with them.

You have just as much potential for this as any other company does. All it takes is something like newsletter printing to start generating interest in your company and how things are run.

You can run stories on your different employees, on the different policies you have, and on how various products were developed. The last example is a particularly important one, because people also like to see where products come from.

All you have to do is look at the variety of shows dedicated to how something is made to see evidence of this. Go over how you come up with products and what goes into making them. Take people on a written tour through your company via your newsletters.

You?re fostering trust in them, along with additional interest in your company, which will lead to extra sales.

This is the most important aspect of newsletter printing. Just because you aren?t directly telling people to buy something, your newsletters are still acting as an advertisement for your company. They encourage people to take a greater interest in you, which translates into additional sales and exposure.

The more a person knows about a company and the products they make the more trust they?ll have in that company. This is the way to start generating greater loyalty in your customers, because you?re letting them get closer to your company.

Information is a powerful tool. The more information people have the more in control they feel, and the more comfortable with a company they?ll be. It isn?t hard to start up a regular newsletter. Maybe it?s time for you to start capitalizing on the potential they provide.
